How to Open Your Vacation Home for the Season  - HomeStead Property Watch And Management Services LLC.

It’s almost that time of year when the weather is perfect to go spend some time at your vacation home or start renting it out. If your home wasn’t in use throughout the winter months it is important that you take the time to get it ready for use. We have compiled a list of items you can go through to get your home ready.

How to Open Your Vacation Home for the Season

Spend Time Cleaning

To make your life easier when it is time for you to use your vacation home for relaxation, go through and do a deep cleaning now. The home was shut up for a few months, which means it probably collected some dirt and dust that should be cleaned. While cleaning, also open up the windows to get some fresh air circulating throughout the home.

While you are cleaning, keep an eye out for signs of insects or pests. Since no one has been living at the property there is a chance pests made your home their home for the winter months. If you see any signs contact a pest control company to get rid of them.

Stock The Pantry

Once you have the kitchen area cleaned, make a list of all the food items you use on a regular basis. If you can afford to, go to the grocery store and stock up on all these items. This will save you time when you go to your vacation home for a break. All the non-perishable items you like will already be at the home.

Run The Water

If you had your home winterized or the water shut off, it is important to remember to turn it back on and flush out the lines. Once you have your water turned on, flush your toilets and let any other fixtures run for a few minutes to make sure there aren’t any air bubbles in the line. While the water is running check for any signs of leaks in the fixtures. If you see any leaks, make sure to get them fixed right away either by hiring someone or fixing it on your own. Checking for problems now will save you from aggravation when you are trying to relax and find a leak.

Spruce Up Your Bedroom

Whether you plan on renting out your property or using it for personal use you want to make sure that the bedroom is up to the standard you want it to be. Consider adding new wall decorations or buying a new set of sheets and a comforter. Now is the time to change it up for what you want.

Before getting into bed, flip the mattress over. If you sleep in the same position every night it can lead to dips forming in the mattress. Remembering to flip it before each new period of heavy use can prevent these dips from forming.

Get The Outside Ready

Once you have finished getting the inside of your home ready, move on to the outside. If there is any debris in the yard from winter pick this up so it won’t cause any issues when mowing the lawn. Trim any bushes or plants that are growing close to the home to prevent possible damage. If you have a garden at the property take this time to start getting it ready. Plant any flowers before you get moved in for good so the house looks ready for you to use it.

If you don’t have any outside furniture consider buying some to spruce up your outside spaces. It can be nice to entertain outside when the weather is good and having places to sit and hang out makes it much easier. If you already have furniture look it over to make sure nothing is damaged and fix anything that needs it.

There is much more you can do to get your vacation home ready. If you are considering renting out the property there may be more you need to do. There are several good resources that can help you get more items to prepare.
